In medioeval times the Good Friday procession began on the Capitoline hill and wound along the Tiber to the Monte dei Cocci in Testaccio, where the crucifixion scene took place. Various places along the route were chosen as scenes for the Stations of the Cross. At the Casa dei Crescenzi, which acted as the Governor's palace, Jesus was brought before Pilate.
